In 1999 the Vipassana Association Switzerland purchased a former children's holiday home in Mont-Soleil and remodelled it for use as a meditation centre. Dhamma Sumeru (“The Celestial Mountain of Dhamma”) has a fitting name for mountainous Switzerland. The site is situated on a quiet hilltop at 1200m (4000feet), surrounded by meadows and forests.
It is located in one of the sunniest places of Switzerland, in a hilly region in the North of Switzerland called “Jura”, with vast elevated plains punctuated with fir trees in lush pastures and farm buildings of light-coloured Jura limestone. It borders France to the north and is crossed by deep canyons to the south. The capital city, Bern, is only 60km (37 miles) from the centre. After purchasing the house, many renovations were done, from repairing the heating and roof to building new kitchen, toilets, showers and staircase. The centre has the capacity to accommodate 55 persons. It is in the middle of a two-hectare (5 acre) property, which has trees, lawns and pathways. Courses are held in English/French and English/German.
